When Chris and Tracey set up home at Acorn Farm they transformed a former chicken shed into their house – they still live there now, but have added a shepherd’s hut and now a woodland camp to their motley crew of rustic handmade homes. Turner’s Wood has also been lovingly crafted by their own hands: a roof fashioned from an abandoned sail, paint brushes as (genius) draught excluders and a separate hut built from fallen trees in the woods. This being used as a kitchen and lounge, with a breakfast bar, mains water and good lighting – all for your own use.Here you’re tucked away in a peaceful patch of oak and beech woodland – no WiFi, but phone signal if you’re desperate – with logs for the wood-burner and hot water bottles to warm you, a chest full of linens and fairy lights twinkling in the gloaming. Both the shepherd's hut and the yurt can be heated, so you'll be cosy year-round. There are lots of spaces around to spread out into, with sports equipment and board games to keep families of all ages entertained. Chris and Tracey really have thought of everything, including treats, toys and blankets for dogs, and games for kids and adults. There's even a treehouse shower halfway up an ancient oak (complete with hot mains water!) and a compost loo with sawdust for sprinkling.Foraging for mushrooms for your campfire breakfast, getting stuck into your welcome hamper and toasting marshmallows together are all excellent reasons not to leave your little haven of quiet. Should you want to stray further afield you’re on the fringes of Dartmoor, with two great pubs and an Italian within striking distance of the farm. But why leave? Bring dogs to run free, horses for leisurely hacks (they’re welcome too) and befriend the sheep who also call your camp their home; only their soft bleating disturbs the peace. Chris is on hand and happy to drive you and your kit across the fields in his 4x4, while Spreyton village is a ten-minute walk for stocking up on supplies in the community store. He and Tracey live at the top of the hill overlooking Acorn Farm’s 45 acres, and also run an antiques shop on site selling fabulously retro collectibles like books and board games. This is a place of wild and private freedom and openness. And tiny pigs!

The steps up to Treetops Treehouse lift you clear into the canopy and you’re suddenly alone with the peaceful breeze through the leaves, the occasional skittering squirrel and only the good kind of twitter. The temptation is to fire up the wood-burner, settle on the sofa and crack into the local welcome cider, but the rest of the treehouse is worth exploring. Upstairs you’ll find the king-size bed and in another room downstairs the huge copper bath, where you can lie back and soak up the quiet as the stress just drains away. The kitchen has everything you need to cook and there’s a barbecue outside on the deck, but if you fancy a treat then book in at the superb restaurant of The Fox & Hounds and head across the grounds for dinner. If you want to leave the car behind, Eggesford train station is just a 5 minute walk away, and the Tarka Line runs to Barnstaple in one direction and Exeter in the other. As well as fishing on the lake and river, there’s the Tarka Trail that’ll take you on foot or by bike through charming villages and beautiful countryside via the odd homely pub. You can hit the coast for surfing, coasteering and a dip in the sea, or just spend the whole time lounging in the treehouse, sipping champagne and looking out over the pond.

The curves of Moss, one of five cabins the owners call Truffles, flow inside and out, giving you the relaxing impression that the world has no sharp edges. Even the handcrafted upcycled armchairs are comfortingly rounded, while the hammock is whatever shape you make when you’re dozing in it. Outside, the 15 acres of woodland enhance the calming effect. There’s a private cooking area with an Aquaforno system, including pizza oven and hot water heater, but also a single gas hob for quick cups of tea. A minute or so through the woods you’ll find the bathrooms, which are situated together but exclusive to each Truffle, so you can leave your stuff when you’re done. With board games and books, you could easily hang out in the Truffle for a couple of days, cosy by the wood burning stove watching out for the family of deer that often roam the woods, and the birdlife that thrives all around you. If you’re after a bit of an adventure though, you have Dartmoor one way and the North Cornwall coast the other. Take on epic hikes and climbs, or just ramble at your leisure. There’s a good chance you don’t make it any further than the Tally Ho in Hatherleigh, which is a local favourite getting quite a reputation for its home brewed beer.

If you went out in 1986 with some Wham! on your Walkman, looking for the finest motorhome money could buy, this is what you would have come home driving. Owner John, who spent his 20s tinkering with VWs was blown away when he found this airstream and lovingly restored it, keeping the original character while adding a few modern touches and positioning it perfectly to make the most of this beautiful part of Devon. Hobs and a microwave have been added to the kitchen and DVD player to the retro feel of the dining area, sofas and leather chair in the cab. Outside there’s a private hot shower and laundry room, a fire pit, a picnic bench and a little crow’s nest deck, where you can sit with morning coffee and look out over the hills or lie back and do some spectacular stargazing. The Led Zeppelin has settled in a secluded field adjacent to John and Sallie-Ann’s home. There are livestock around, so keep an eye on the dogs if you have them, but you won’t see anybody else unless you’re out for the day. Even some of the many local hikes are fairly deserted, although the popular Tarka Trail is also nearby and makes for some great casual cycling. You could drop into Bude and other beaches along the coast for surfing and sunbathing, walk to some great pubs or explore the area’s diverse history and culture, from the underground passages of Exeter to the alpacas of Lydford Gorge. When you get back to The Led Zeppelin, crack open a bottle of something and settle in to watch and listen for bats and owls hunting in the dusk.

The Bull Inn in is an organic, ingredient-led pub, that offers guests a wonderfully comfy stay in the Devon countryside. This Devonshire gem is fully committed to keeping its environmental footprint to a minimum - which fits perfectly into the alternative and bohemian approach the market town is known for. Chris and Tracey know a thing or two about how to set up a home. For years they lived in a house Chris built on his father’s land, but when that land was sold they came to Acorn Farm, where they bought and converted the chicken house that they still call home. So it’s no surprise that when it came to creating a shepherd’s hut camp, they were in their element. The old pagan tree circle at the centre of a field seemed the perfect spot, making the whole space feel like one giant room, not forgetting you also have use of the whole 45 acre farm. Chris set to work on constructing a spacious family hut, with two double bunks beds and a single that works as a sofa, plus a communal dining table on one side and the kitchen down the other. A second hut houses the shower and a compost loo and despite the complete seclusion of the site, both the bathroom and the kitchen sink have hot running water and there’s even a charging point for phones. After Chris had built all the functional stuff, Tracey got creative. A retro theme spans the 50s and 60s, from the cutlery to the taps, the radio and an old sewing machine, but she also filled trunks and boxes with rugs, hampers, board games and outdoor sports things, so you’ll have plenty to do either in the hut or in the big flat meadow area at the bottom of the field. They set up a barbecue spot under one of the larger trees, hung lanterns all around the circle and Acorn Farm was done. They are now ready to welcome you into their private paradise, greet you with wine and cheese and introduce you to the friendly farm animals (children and dogs even get their own little goodie pack too!) or alternatively, leave you to your own devices in the magic of a tranquil circle of trees on the edge of the beautiful peace of Dartmoor. Be prepared to totally forget life outside of Acorn Farm, as Chris and Tracey have made sure everything is thought of, so you can completely relax.
