The Pig At Combe

One of the Pig hotel-group's litter, The Pig at Combe is another smash hit: a masterfully made-over country pile with a statement restaurant, gorgeous grounds and fine Arabian horses for neighbours. The kitchen-gardens grow 12 types of mint, seafood only has to travel eight miles up from the coast and the pristine grounds feature giant cedar trees with swings suspended from which to release your inner eight year old. In a secluded spot overlooking the lush Devon countryside, this large, modern Cedar-clad home is the perfect place to unwind with family in style and luxury. The heart of this home is the stunning kitchen and dining area. A large island sits in the centre of a sleek, modern kitchen with all the conveniences required for creating feasts for large groups. Gather round the island, pour a drink and keep the chef company. Congregate for meals at the large marble dining table which, when covered in laden dishes and full glasses, becomes the place to create lovely memories. Bi-fold doors offer the countryside as a backdrop and, when the weather is fine, pull them aside to bring in the fresh country air and give greater prominence to the fabulous surroundings. The outdoor space is wonderful with something for all to enjoy. Youngsters will love the large grounds, trampoline and play area, as well as splashing about in the swim spa. A large terrace becomes the outside living space in the warmer months and sun loungers and patio dining furniture make it a comfortable, relaxing space to unwind. Lie back in warm rays listening to the gentle splashing from the spa and distant laughter of young ones playing. The fabulous exterior is more-than-matched by the delightful interior. Light, bright and spacious, with an abundance of large picture windows, it is a special place to chill out whatever the weather. Tartan carpets and rugs keep bedrooms and living spaces cosy, while smooth tiles add to the clean, neutral aesthetic. Take some quiet time in the peaceful living room and curl up with a coffee on the large sofas beside the crackling wood burner. Patio doors open out on to the deck for easy access to the garden terrace. When bedtime calls, there are five luxurious rooms to chose from, including one on the ground floor of the property. They all boast modern ensuites, high-end mattresses and linens and have magnificent views across the county. Should the wonderful views inspire guests to explore the area, there is plenty to see and do - head to the coast for days swimming, building sandcastles and rock-pooling. Hikers and bikers will love the rugged Blackdown Hills and there are lots of traditional pubs and great restaurants for refuelling after a day filled with adventure. The Ashill Inn and The Drewe Arms at Broadhembury both come well recommended.

The colour and light of this romantic retreat are a beautiful blend of art and craft, which is what you’d expect in a cabin built by an artist and a craftsman. Nick made most of the furniture and Dolly’s creativity brings the colour, along with a scattering of finds from their life in Mexico and extensive travels. The style is easily matched by the substance, with a big double bed, fully-equipped kitchen and modern shower room with Mexican tiles and a handmade copper sink, meaning you have everything you need in the intimate, characterful space. There’s also bunk space cleverly installed above the sofa so you can bring the kids. Just outside the cabin you’ll find Jackson’s stand out feature, the private wood-fired hot tub surrounded by trees and shrubbery in a corner of the garden. With the lanterns lit and the stars out above you, a late night soak adds an extra dash of magic to a restorative, romantic break. If you’re not content to spend time just soaking and lounging, Nick and Dolly, who live on site can include you in their summer Monday pizza events using the great earth wood fired oven. They can also give you pointers on exploring south Devon, from canoeing on the river Dart, walking the Kingsbridge estuary to wild hikes on Dartmoor. There’s great surfing at Bantham beach, hidden coves all along the coastline and quaint country villages with pubs serving superb local ale. At the end of a day the cabin welcomes you home to pull up a chair by the wood burner and enjoy the quiet as you wait for the hot tub to heat.
