This gorgeous restored old inn is situated between the Lake District and the Solway Coast and is perfectly placed for anyone wanting to explore the stunning surroundings before returning to the cosy fire lit inn for fine wines and a delicious dinner. Brimming with local history, The Old Mill Inn offers a charming and luxurious getaway in characterful surroundings. Arrive to a warm welcome and a cold drink in the front bar where you can warm up by the fire and begin to unwind in elegant surroundings. The Old Mill lies in a leafy hollow by a shallow beck (or stream for non-Cumbrians) on the edges of Dearham. Situated just beyond the northern border of the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country’s finest areas of natural beauty. Pull on your wellies and head out to explore this stunning part of the world and clear the cobwebs away. The hosts recommend a visit to The Lakes Distillery, Wordsworth's House and Garden and for beaches you'll be spoilt for choice with Allonby Beach, Maryport Prominade which provides a lovely coastal walk, and Buttermere for a perfect Lake Walk. Afterwards you can head back to the warm and lovely inn where you can enjoy a hot shower and a well earned drink before you settle down for an evening of fabulous food. The pub is gastro and serves plenty of classics with ingredients sourced locally and a menu that changes seasonally.

    By Lake Windermere in the stunning Lake District are five luxury holiday cottages in the grounds of The Swan Hotel. Known as ‘The Nests’, each enjoys spectacular views across the beautiful surrounding countryside. The largest of the cottages is The Dormouse, which sleeps up to eight people (six adults and two children). Here there are two super king-size bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a children’s bunk room with four single beds. There is also a further family bathroom. Once again there is a sitting room with log burner, kitchen/diner, and private outdoor terrace. In all four cottages guests are greeted by a welcome pack consisting of essentials, including homemade cake and biscuits. Finally there is The Love Nest. This exquisite studio cottage has been designed to be the perfect romantic getaway for two people. It has a super-king bed, while the bathroom has both a roll top bath and a double walk-in shower with a rainforest head. Bright and airy in its design, there is a log burner inside and a private terrace with a fireplace outside. While those staying in the cottages can enjoy absolute privacy, they are also perfectly placed to make use of the hotel and its facilities. Unlike many boathouses this one has the luxury of being on the larger side and is rather luxurious. Dispense with your coats in the hallway and make your way in to the cosy open plan living area. The first thing that will strike you is the view. A large, plump comfy sofa and armchair sit facing bi-folding glass doors providing an uninterrupted view of the beautiful lake with the Cumbrian hills framing it in the distance. You might want to just crack open a bottle, turn on the pretty electric fire and settle in to watch the sky change over the water. The interior has been thoughtfully decorated to provide a cosy nook with everything you could need to burrow in and leave the world behind. The kitchen is fully equipped for the creation of wonderful feasts and the hosts have kindly provided a wine cooler to keep things extra civilised. Enjoy a long, lazy supper at the unique marble dining table which seats four. Afterwards you can snuggle up and watch a movie, perhaps crack open the monopoly, chess or dominoes, or maybe just get back to that view. You'll sleep deeply and peacefully in the comfortable king size bed with luxurious Egyptian cotton bedding and in the morning you can watch the news from the comfort of your duvet on the Sony TV.
