Hilary left Bristol in search of a wilder life and now, with Big Red, she invites you to come and try it for yourself. The 1987 Bluebird American school bus sits in a secluded glade on her farm, with the hot tub outside and a shower and loo in a little cabin of their own, just behind the bus. Gorgeous views of the Brecon Beacons change every minute with the shifting light and you’re surrounded by birdsong at dawn and dusk, with an incredibly clear starscape coming out at night to put on a show as well. Big Red found her way to Holland after her academic career was over, spending a little time as a Santa’s grotto, which explains some of the colouring and signage. She's been glammed up a bit since then, with a diesel burner and a super king-size bed making it a cosy, romantic escape.

Around you, masses of sky, farmland, woodland and… not much else. It’s a place to get back in touch with nature, drinking the delicious spring water and lazing in the hot tub or lying on the grass with kites and kestrels gliding above you. If you do fancy treating yourself, then drive into Usk and check out The Olway Inn or King's Head and The Nag's Head, which have excellent locally sourced menus and make superb Sunday lunch venues. Their hearty meals will fuel you up for walking in the Beacons, or lull you into a doze for an afternoon nap before you fire up the hot tub again.

    Tucked away in the Brecon Beacons National Park near the Welsh border, this restored railway carriage is now a cosy cabin for two. Surrounded by some truly spectacular scenery that has inspired generations of artists and writers and close to the 12th century ruins of Llanthony Priory, there’s no better place to unplug and unwind. You won’t find any WiFi here, just rugged landscapes, the sound of birdsong and a whole lot of peace and quiet. A private farm track leads to the cabin where you’ll find your own dedicated parking. The main carriage is the living, sleeping and cooking space. It’s kept warm and cosy by a wood burning stove which will ward off the cold on chilly nights and there is also underfloor heating throughout. There’s also a luxurious king-size bed with soft bed linen that guarantees a great night's sleep. You’ve got all the basics in the kitchen to get you started, such as a two-ring electric hob, an oven, a grill and a fridge. There will also be some fresh eggs, bread, butter and milk waiting for you, along with some tea and coffee. You can also buy home-made burgers and sausages from the farm to pop on the barbecue. While you won’t find any WiFi or mobile phone signal, you will find USB charging points to keep your essential devices powered up. There’s an adjoining bathroom, fully equipped and with a heated rail so your towels will be waiting for you, fluffy and warm, after your shower. In the bathroom, you’ll also find some shampoo and soaps with lovely fragrances that were made in the countryside. Outside, there’s a deck area with a table and chairs where you can sit out with your morning coffee in what feels like your own secret valley. As the evenings draw in, the stars put on quite a show on clear nights as the cabin is located in a Dark Sky area. Wrap up warm next to the firepit and toast some marshmallows as you spot constellations in the night’s sky. Spend lazy afternoons exploring the valley, wading across streams and following old drovers’ tracks to discover castles and churches dotted around the landscape. A 10-minute walk will get you to a luxury hotel alongside the ruins of the 12th century Llanthony Priory, where you can stop off at the Crypt Bar for a drink. A couple of minutes down the road, you’ll get to the village where you can treat yourself to tea and cake or some locally sourced food at the pub.
