Up the handcrafted staircase, you’ll find a trap door, that you can lower behind you to shut yourself away from the world. The lounge, a deeply calm and inviting space, has floor to ceiling windows, and a wood burner for the chillier nights. With a vast expanse of countryside surrounding you, why not take out the vintage Dutch bikes to explore the area, tiring yourself out ready for an evening of relaxation. Despite having a generously equipped and stylishly furnished kitchen, Pomeroy also sports an outdoor kitchen area, with its own sink, BBQ, pizza oven and even an outdoor fridge – so either make an intimate meal for two in the warm confines of the kitchen or take to the balcony to enjoy food al fresco, with a view of fields towards the vineyard and the cathedral.     Hut 1898 is a grand and opulent shepherds hut that offers plenty of space for guests to spread out and relax in style. The clean and simple exterior belies a deceptively spacious and luxurious interior that has a fully fitted kitchen, separate bathroom and stunning views of the lake and woodland through every window. The living area and bedroom have been decorated with understated class, with dark wood and tan leather that combines well with the beautiful botanical wall paper, giving the space an elegant timeless feel. Guests will also love the wood burning stove that adds a cosiness to the stylish details throughout. The luxury oversized monsoon shower has pretty mosaic tiles which surround a glass panel providing a view of the lake. It's big enough for two, and as with every part of this gorgeous hut, no detail has been overlooked, including the heated towel rails. Step out of the hot steaming water, wrap yourself in a warmed robe and help yourself to the fully stocked antique gin bar, before settling down to dry in front of the wood burner. Hut 1898 provides the perfect meeting of old time charm and modern convenience, ensuring guests can enjoy a comfortable and relaxing break. Step out through huge glass doors onto the deck and be treated to a little oasis of woodland with your own private garden. Out here you'll find a hot tub of wood and metal which fits seamlessly into the setting, and views of the entire lake, up to the wooded hills beyond. You could be forgiven for thinking you'd somehow landed in Canada. Pop back in to the bar and get a top up before taking advantage of the pizza shed and eating al fresco in the bamboo den fire pit area. This place is truly wonderful and allows you to be part of the wilderness without feeling like you're out in the wild. Enjoy your homemade pizza with a few glasses of wine, and as darkness falls and owls hoot, climb into the hot tub and marvel at the sounds and sights from your own private haven with fairy lights twinkling all around. Before bed, throw some complimentary marshmallows on the fire pit, then snuggle up in the delightfully cosy bedroom and watch your favourite film. Crewkerne is a market town situated two miles to the east where you'll find a Waitrose and plenty of independent shops. We recommend having lunch at the Town Mill Bakery or the Mill Tea & Dinning Room, followed by a visit to the microbrewery and art gallery housed in an old water mill.     The canal that winds through the peaceful countryside just south of Bath is great for an afternoon stroll, but why walk when you can take the boat? When you arrive at Hunky Dory, Clare and Hibah, who renovated the boat themselves over three years of loving labour, will teach you all you need to know about piloting and canal etiquette (no license needed!) so even complete beginners will be set to sail. The essential handover will take a couple of hours, so it’s best to arrive as early as you can, then once you’re comfortable being on the water you’ll be left to your own devices but there's a handy guide to refer to if you need. Rumble down to other moorings, or set up a deck chair on the grass by the towpath and chat with passers-by. There are a few good pubs within cruising distance. Clare and Hibah specially recommend the Boatman’s Breakfast at The Lock Inn, and the Bathampton Mill, closest to your original mooring, for sunshine drinks in the garden.While there’s a joy to chugging down the canal for the day, Hunky Dory Days is a lovely place to be even when you’re moored up. Clever and colourful design in everything from the wallpaper to the Hunky Dory Days mugs make the boat a homely space. The bathroom is small, but the shower is hot and you’ll get the hang of swiveling the loo out of the way in no time! If you stay for more than a few days, the loo might need emptying too, but Clare and Hibah will talk you through that as well. Covers at both ends of the boat mean you can drive or just sit and relax in any weather, while good insulation keeps the inside warm. The kitchen has gas hobs and everything you need for cooking, as well as the all-important kettle, so you can sit out on deck with a cup of tea as the fields slide gently by.

After a pampering session, light the BBQ or get the pizza oven going in the outdoor kitchen and enjoy a delicious meal out on the deck. In the evenings, there's a fire bowl to keep you cosy and warm as you watch the sunset and even do a bit of stargazing. If you can tear yourselves away from your cosy hideaway, there's plenty of exploring to do in the area. The farm is located close to the Devon and Dorset borders, meaning you have many miles of spectacular countryside on the doorstep and easy access to the coast. For a bit of culture, visit the spectacular Mantacute House nearby, a fantastic example of Elizabethan architecture, or head down to Forde Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery. For a taste of the local cider, Perry's Cider Mills is just a short drive away, offering tours and tastings. Venture a little further south and you'll hit the spectacular Jurassic Coast where you can sample fresh seafood at Lyme Regis' restaurants or go fossil hunting along the famous beaches.
