The Transmitter Bunker
- 0
- 3 nights Min Stay
£800.00 per week
The Transmitter Bunker is, just as its name suggests, a former transmitter block that once served RAF Ringstead during World War Two. Part of the Chain Home Radar, a crucial early-warning system that stretched all the way from Cornwall to Norfolk, the bunker was decommissioned in 1956. These days, you’ll find it transformed into a fascinating heritage-rich retreat for up to four guests and their two well-behaved dogs. Secluded in Ringstead Bay, part of a designated Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the sea-and-country views from the bunker are as magnificent and far-reaching as you’d expect. Yet the views are also rather spectacular inside, with plenty of enthralling original features that feel like taking a step back in time. Ideal for history buffs, there’s a fascinating ‘museum’ cupboard and a photo-book that documents the bunker’s transformation. However, modern facilities are all present and correct, too! They include a Smart TV for snuggly evenings warmed by an open fire, and a well-equipped kitchen that comes complete with a dishwasher. Enjoy your home-cooked feasts cosied up in the bunker, fuelled by laughter and wine. On a balmy summer’s day you could choose to head out to the private, furnished patio instead, for a delicious supper devoured by sunset. Who knows which of the abundant local wildlife you’ll also spot? When it’s finally time to say goodnight, two comfy bedrooms – a deluxe twin and a quirky bunk-room – will be ready and waiting. There’s an elegant shower room to freshen up in, too.

Bucks Coppice

£182.75 per night
Ramble through ancient woods on the miles of the Jubilee Trail that crosses at the top of the country lane, then come home to lie on the suntrap deck and slide into the lake whenever you get too hot. The only visitors to this secluded spot, hidden in the depths of Dorset countryside, are a huge array of bird life, maybe deer, wild boar and if you're super lucky, visiting otters. Mix up the walks in Hooke Woods and even a visit to the Hooke Park Architecture Centre, with trips to market towns and the cliffs and coves of the Jurassic coast, with beaches at Eype and Seatown overlooked by great pubs. The chance to stay in the middle of a Site of Scientific Interest is rare, but after over 20 years living on the site in a caravan, Sid was granted permission to build this fabulous forest retreat. He did so with a considerate balancing of the comfort of nature and that of humans. The off-grid space draws its water from the lake with solar power and gas taking care of lighting, cooking and water heating. Any sense that this is “roughing it” is dispelled by the smart, understated style of the interior and the swish kitchen space, an aspiring chef’s dream. All this looking out upon the tranquility of the lake and the sea of greenery on your doorstep.
